A Psychodynamic Approach to Therapy

Individuals who seek out psychotherapy want not only to better understand the core of their issues, but want also to take control of their lives with increased self-awareness.  In her work with individuals, Dr. Schweigler utilizes psychodynamic psychotherapy, which focuses on the impact of past experiences on current functioning. Psychotherapy is a process of internal healing.  That core healing, which comes from understanding and increased awareness, activates self-enhancing behavioral choices and promotes well-being.

A Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy

In her work with couples, Dr. Schweigler offers tools to develop healthy relationships, break negative cycles and deal with differences without distancing from each other. Couples often enter therapy in crisis.  The therapy process must provide skills to manage that crisis and move forward with essential communication mechanisms.

The psychobiological approach to couple’s therapy emphasizes assessing and exploring each partner’s early childhood attachment relationships and the impact on the current primary relationship. Partners learn to have effective interactions by attuning to the vulnerabilities, needs and reactions of their partners, which leads to a sense of safety and security within the relationship. Primary relationships are always in a developmental process. Those relationships which bring the best out of each partner, recognizing that change can enhance closeness, are relationships that stay healthy and sustain long-term intimacy.
